Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy has become more and more popular over the last years, benefiting from major press. It is supposed to help prevent or treat different conditions from headaches to stress. It has been proven scientifically that odors can affect our mood and our bodies. Who has not felt warm inside after smelling a fresh batch of chocolate cookies or revived from the fresh scent of mint? The different odors in aromatherapy trigger different brain triggers. Most of the time, aromatherapy involves volatile plant oils like rosemary or lavender, but there has been a new trend for more complex scent like freshly washed clothes or apple pie. The key with aromatherapy is to try out a few scents. It’s a highly personal relaxation approach since odors are not appreciated equally.

Here are a few scents to try at home, in your bedroom, as essential oils in your bath or in a sauna.

- Basil for concentration
- Lavender treats irritability
- Rosemary good for fatigue
- Lemon anti-stress and anti-depression
- Rose is good to promote happiness
- Mint is anti-stress

Be very careful when choosing oils and absolutes. Prefer standardized oils that are in accordance with the FCC and stay clear from the cheap stuff. There is more to aromatherapy then smell; there is also a question of chemicals, which play a big part in the treatment. Some people swear by aromatherapy while others do not get affected by it. It is really a question of trying it out. You can try aromatherapy in many ways: you can burn essential oils, incorporate them to a potpourri, dilute them with sweet almond oil and apply it to your temples, incorporate it to a hot bath or even in a sauna.

Using the bath or sauna technique is one of the best ways to benefit from the essential oils since steam heightens the smell and carries the beneficial vapors. When you have a cold, try a few drops of diluted eucalyptus or sapling essential oils, your stuffy nose will be gone in a flash.

As with any alternative medecine, you should always consult your doctor before trying anything.

Testimonials

"The first time we used it the temperature was about 80 degrees Celsius.  After 20 minutes, we had enough.  We are better at regulating the temp to about 60 degrees Celsius and the humidity to about 40%.  We are very comfortable at these settings.  The steam flow is impressive. "
